Performance

Greenworks goes with a 24″ dual action blade for this hedge trimmer. The “dual action” designation simply means that it is able to cut in both directions and is a must-have feature.

The branch capacity is 3/4″ and that’s the standard baseline we like to see. Some residential models move up to 1″ and Pro models reach beyond that even. Realistically, 3/4″ is all you need, even if you neglect your hedge trimming for a season.

The blades slice away at 3200 SPM, a speed that matches some commercial-level cordless models.

When it comes to actually trimming hedges, we don’t have any complaints about the cutting performance. The knives make quick work of well-maintained shrubs.

When it comes to those that don’t get as much attention, the blades keep their speed up well.

There’s no doubt that you can feel the weight of this tool, especially when you need to work at shoulder height. Without a battery, we weighed the Greenworks HT60B00 at 7.6 pounds. With our 4.0 Ah battery, it bulks up to 12.0 pounds.

The 2.0 Ah battery is the way to go on this model. It balances the weight much better, drops the weight by more than 1.5 pounds, and still gives you up to an hour of runtime.

Key Features

Rotating Handle

I really enjoy having a rotating handle on my hedge trimmers. It’s a big help when you’re trimming sides or angles and helps take some of the strain off of your back. To rotate the handle, drop your finger into the ring below the trigger and pull back. Then rotate the handle left or right into any of its 5 positions.

Simple Controls

You need safety measures on cordless lawn care equipment and the Greenworks 60V Hedge Trimmer manages it without overcomplicating things. Simply press the trigger safety in on the handle and the trigger is hot. There’s no on/off switch to deal with or guide handle trigger to engage.

Battery Placement

There are only so many ways to install a battery on a hedge trimmer and I’m not a big fan of side entry. I prefer to see it slide down from the top or in from the back. Greenworks’ design doesn’t throw off the side-to-side balance by going with side entry, but a different orientation can help slim down housing width.

Price

If you’re already rocking on this battery platform, you can pick up the Greenworks 60V Hedge Trimmer for $119 at Lowe’s. The kit runs $199 with a 2.0 Ah battery and charger. Cordless OPE voltages are all over the map and not many brands play in the 60V range.

  • EGO 56V Hedge Trimmer: $199 (2.5 Ah kit)
  • Greenworks 60V Hedge Trimmer: $199 (2.0 Ah kit)
  • Craftsman 60V Hedge Trimmer: $219 (2.5 Ah kit)
  • Echo 58V Hedge Trimmer: $341.44 (2.0 Ah kit)

As of late May, EGO’s kit is on sale for $169 and Greenworks has theirs for $179.
