DeWalt Cordless Backpack Sprayer Reduces the Fatigue of Manual Pump Sprayers
Manual pump backpack sprayers work well for certain applications. However, if you go through gallons of pesticide or weed killer on a regular basis, you likely want something less mechanical. The DeWalt 20V Max cordless backpack sprayer is one of many products that use battery power to eliminate manual pumping.
We’re just not sure we can recommend it at this time.
DeWalt 20V Max Cordless Backpack Sprayer Features
Any DeWalt 20V battery can power the backpack sprayer. DeWalt also gasketed the door of the battery compartment to keep it safe from water intrusion. The compartment supports batteries up to their FlexVolt 12Ah packs. You can, however, easily make do with a 5Ah pack—and why carry any additional weight?
Sprayer Controls and Accessories
Like the Milwaukee SwitchTank backpack sprayer, the power and flow rate controls live on the left side of the backpack. You can reach them easily with your left hand while wearing the sprayer. That keeps you from having to set down the wand or remove the sprayer. You can deduce this tool works much better for right-handers as a result.
The Variflo variable power dial lets you choose the amount of spraying force you want. It has ample options and we liked the ranges. A battery level indicator also lives on that side. You would use this before doing the DeWalt backpack sprayer since you can’t view it while wearing the tool.
Adjusting the Spray Pattern
DeWalt makes it easy to adjust your spray pattern. In addition to the multiple power settings, they include five fixed nozzles plus an adjustable brass nozzle. All store conveniently on the wand handle. We LOVE this element of the design.
The DeWalt 20V backpack sprayer handles a number of largely noncorrosive chemicals. Thanks to the use of Viton seals, you can use the sprayer with the following:
- Herbicides & pesticides
- Cleaning agents & disinfectants
- Liquid fertilizer
- Stains
- Sealants
Additional Highlights
- Harness design includes a hip strap to shift the weight off of your shoulders
- Wide tank opening reduces spills
- Nickel-plated brass swivel connection between the hose and tank improves range of motion without kinking
- Heavy-duty 21-inch stainless steel wand
- Battery level indicator next to the Variflo dial
- Kin-reducing hose design
- 3-layer filtration system keeps debris from clogging the pump
Cautions and Recommendations
We had two samples of the DeWalt 20V backpack sprayer in for testing. Both ended up quickly exhibiting problems. The first review sample leaked from the wand and wouldn’t give us a secure seal—even when we tightened the fittings. The second review unit leaked underneath the tank. It likely had a faulty seal, hose, or gasket—we don’t know.
While we like the concept and design of the DeWalt DXSP190681 backpack sprayer, we can’t recommend it at this time. Hopefully, DeWalt irons out the issues—or perhaps we had really bad luck and got the only two leaky samples in the country.
DeWalt 20V Max Cordless Backpack Sprayer Price
DeWalt offers the backpack sprayer as a kit with a 2.0 Ah battery and charger for $269.99. Compared to the Milwaukee Switch Tank system with kits starting at $399, it’s significantly less expensive, though it doesn’t have some of the features such as the ability to swap tanks. We’ve also been using the Milwaukee Switch Tank for well over a year without any issues.
