When you look at the rear of a zero-turn mower, you’re likely to find one of three engines. It is no secret that Briggs & Stratton, Kawasaki, and Kohler have a strong-hold on the mower engine market. Most of the mower manufacturers, consumer and pro, power their sleds with one of these three. The new Yamaha MX-V V-Twin engines may be changing this game a bit.

Not only has Yamaha made these MX-V V-Twin engines available for repower, but Yamaha is also working with some key manufacturers. You can now buy a Yamaha powered zero-turn, from Bad Boy Mowers and Gravely. We’re sure to see more companies make these available on their mowers. Competition is typically a good thing, and this is not Yamaha’s first rodeo. We’re excited to see what’s in store for the engine market.

The Yamaha MX-V V-Twin engines are available in a variety of sizes and options. Yamaha makes the V-Twin in EFI or carbureted. The new MX825V and MX800V are carbureted engines,  designed for high fuel efficiency, while not sacrificing performance. This line of Yamaha MX-V V-Twin engines deliver power and torque curves specifically designd for the OPE industry.

Spark delivery is from Yamaha’s proven TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition) system. This same type TCI ignition can be found on their motorcycles, boat motors, and other small engines. Moreso, the Yamaha MX-V V-Twin engines also come with a ball-bearing supported P.T.O. Finally, a stainless steel tuned muffler is available as an option. Finally, the Yamaha engines, including the optional muffler, come with a 3-year warranty.

This MX-V V-Twin is not just a copy either. Yamaha started from scratch, designing this series from the ground up. Let’s be honest, you may not have ridden a Yamaha zero-turn, but you’re probably familiar with Yamaha power. From motorcycles, to UTVs, and even cars, Yamaha has been building powerplants for many decades. It’s not like this is a far stretch for the engine manufacturer. At the same time, will they win over industry pros that rely on the “other” three?

Power Options

The power for the Yamaha MX-V V-Twin engine series range from the MX800V 26.5HP to the MX825V-EFI producing 33.8HP. The MX800V and MX825V are carbuerated models, while the MX775V-EFI, MX800V-EFI, and MX825V-EFI include Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI).
