Are You Ready To Make The Switch To An All-Electric Work Truck?
As everyone talks about electric vehicles, we keep wondering if they’re ready for prime time on the jobsite. Based on the latest news, we wonder if the base-level electric Ford F150 Lightning Pro would make a good work truck. While you can upgrade to the Platinum trim level, the base model comes in just under $40,000. Compelling? Perhaps.
Ford F150 Lightning Electric as a Work Truck
The Ford F150 Lightning has more torque than any non-electric F150. It specs out at 775 ft-lbs. This is impressive in its own right, but especially so coupled with the fact that it runs on batteries. The maximum towing capacity (10,000 lbs) and 563 max horsepower also impress. Even the base model tows up to 5,000 lbs. The load weight is a different story. It comes in lower than the standard gas F-150 due to the increased battery weight put on the chassis.
Ford claims up to 230 miles with the standard model. That increases to 320 miles with the extended range battery—not available on the Pro trim level.
Using the Ford F150 as a Generator
On top of that, the F150 Lightning acts as a fully functioning generator using Pro Power Onboard. According to Ford, it can support a worksite for up to three days with the extended range battery, including the drive back and forth each day. Is this feature enough to make the Ford F150 Lightning Pro a good work truck for the average Pro? It’s certainly a nice-to-have feature.
We also like the ample storage capacity. Instead of shoehorning electric motors into standard truck body, Ford did its homework with the electric F150 Lightning. Consequently, it has the largest “frunk” (front trunk) of any electric pickup truck on the market. It measures 14.1 cubic feet. The 5.5-foot cargo bed has the option to add four 120V outlets to power your tools on the jobsite.
Also featured is a tailgate work surface, which has useful details like an integrated ruler and mobile device holder.

The base model Ford F150 Lightning Pro starts at $39,974. What has so many people talking is that this costs nearly $5,000 less than the 4-wheel drive Ford F-150 XL crew cab gas model!
Prices raise with the different models, all the way up to the F-150 Lightning Platinum, which starts at $90,874.
