Greenworks 60V Edger Gives Your Lawn a Little Off the Sides

When given the option of an attachment system or dedicated tools, some prefer the flexibility of the former. When it comes to an edger, however, we prefer a dedicated tool. Greenworks happens to have both options. Testing the standalone Greenworks 60V edger gave us a chance to see how it compared to the version with the brushless motor up at the powerhead.

This model made our Best Trimmers and Edgers: Prosumer list!

Greenworks 60V Battery-Powered Edger Size and Weight

People prefer attachment systems for their convenience and also for the fact that these tools break down into smaller pieces for storage. Compare that to the 86-inch length of this Greenworks 60V edger. The depth adjustment ideally helps you set the blade depth for this tool. It also, however, lets you adjust for the user’s height. With my 6-foot, 2-inch frame, I found that dropping it all the way down let me operate the edger so that the motor housing stayed above the pavement. It adjusts up to 1.75 inches of cutting depth.

The tool weighs just 10.5 pounds without the battery and 13.4 pounds with the kitted 2.0Ah pack. We like to see string trimmers around 10 pounds with a battery, however, edgers get some leeway since they rest on the ground while you use them. Indeed, using the Greenworks 2700103VT 60V edger didn’t feel at all cumbersome while we worked.

Easy-to-Use Controls

All battery-powered trimmers and edgers include required safeties due to the instant-start nature of these tools. This model features only a single speed (common for non-attachment style edgers). A variable speed trigger gives you some extra control if and when needed.

60V trigger safety

For safety, a 2-stage trigger helps prevent accidental activation when you pick up the tool. It felt very intuitive to use. You simply grab hold of the handle and push forward on the trigger before squeezing it to engage the edger blade.

Additional Highlights

  • Blade guard
  • Rear debris guard with blade position indicator
  • Large 8-inch curb wheel
  • No gas fumes, emissions, or noise
  • Almost no regular maintenance required

Greenworks 60V Battery-Powered Edger Performance

As you might expect from a Greenworks 60V tool, this battery-powered edger features a brushless motor. It manages to spin the standard (i.e. easily replaceable) 8-inch blade at up to 7000 RPM.

After adjusting the cutting depth of the edger, it cut through even really overgrown areas with lots of power. We also felt it exhibited low vibration. As we redefined some driveway edging it felt commensurate with a 30cc gas edger.

As we used it, we noticed that it sounded remarkably quiet as well. Even when spinning the blades at full speed while edging we measured just 74 decibels at the operator’s ear.

Runtime varies and has a lot to do with whether you use it to maintain a well-edged yard—or tackle the monstrosity that is the neglected shop driveway… Work the motor hard and that runtime drops more quickly. In general, expect up to 60 minutes of use in light, dry conditions and much less than that when defining a new edge.

Greenworks 60V Battery-Powered Edger Price

You can pick up the Greenworks 60V edger at Tractor Supply. With a 2.0Ah battery and charger, it retails for $300. You can also order the kit directly from the Greenworks website or get the bare tool for around $180.

The Bottom Line

Greenworks designed a competent and capable 60V edger. This single-speed tool operates like a mid-level gas tool and gets the job done with plenty of power and far less noise. If you like the idea of a dedicated edger more than a modular attachment system, this tool should serve you well for many years.
