Greenworks Pro 60V Residential ZT Mower RZ 42R

Greenworks Pro 60V 42″ Residential and Lawn Tractor Power Through Lawn Care

We were lucky enough to get a visit from our friends at Greenworks to take a look at two very special products: the Greenworks Pro 60V residential ZT mower and Lawn Tractor. These depart from the 82V 48-inch residential zero-turn , and we think it’s good news for homeowners looking for more value.

Greenworks Pro 60V Residential ZT Power

Greenworks’ first residential zero-turn featured a 48-inch deck and followed along as a natural trickle down from their commercial ZTs.

The Greenworks Pro 60V residential ZT (zero-turn mower) starts with a completely different power source: 60V batteries. They’re the same 60V batteries that power the Pro 60V string trimmers, chainsaws, and other lawn equipment.

The RZ 42r mower can run at a lower power level with as few a three batteries but operates best with six. Included in the price are size 8.0Ah batteries and three rapid dual-port chargers. The significance is that you can use them to get your batteries back to a full charge in just one hour. Unlike the 48-inch model, there is not an onboard charging option this time.

Feel like you’re on the outside looking in if you invested in 80V? No problem—Greenworks has 80V models, too!

RZ 42r Performance First Impressions

We didn’t get a chance to do a full runtime test, but Greenworks tells us to expect to mow over an acre on a charge. To get the best runtime, you can run at its standard power level. For regular maintenance cuts (removing ~2 inches of grass), this 60V residential ZT mower does a nice job.

Side Discharge

However, there’s also what we’re calling a “Boost” mode. When you get into grass that’s thicker or longer, you can kick that into gear to power through and still get a clean cut.

There’s a boost mode for the drive speed as well. In the time we had with the Greenworks 42-inch residential ZT mower, the standard drive speed was great for mowing our large yard and we really only used the boost speed to transport back to the shop.

Transitioning to Battery Power

Greenworks is conscious that the switch from gas to battery power is a big step and they’re doing a couple of things to make it feel more natural.

They added a spring-loaded key start that acts just like the spring-loaded ignition on your gas model. It’s a little odd not hearing any startup sounds the way you do on an engine, but it’s helpful to have that action built in so you know you’ve turned it on.

The design team also dialed in the acceleration in the lap bars to feel similar to a gas residential ZT mower. You can typically get faster acceleration if you want from electric (ever ride in a Tesla?), and we like the extra attention here.

Overall, it took about 5 minutes to get used to driving. Once you get a feel for the lap bars and turning, it’s a very easy transition.

Greenworks Pro 60V Lawn Tractor

Take the foundation of the Greenworks Pro 60V residential ZT mower, swap the upper and the drivetrain and you get the Greenworks Pro 60V Lawn Tractor. As much as the ZT has the design and feel of a gas model, so does the lawn tractor.

Its steering wheel and foot pedals make it a much more approachable mower if a ZT’s system isn’t what you’re after. Like the zero-turn mower, it runs on up to six 60V batteries and has a 42-inch deck.

Both the Greenworks Pro 60V Residential ZT mower and Lawn Tractor come with six 8.0Ah batteries and three dual-port rapid chargers. Expect the 42-inch ZT to $4999 and the Lawn Tractor to run $3999 when they hit stores.

Final Thoughts

We’ll update this once we have more time to fully test these mowers. For now, we really like what we see and the design team clearly put a lot of thought into it.
