Has Black and Decker Released a New Car Engine Modification?

The Short Answer is “No”…

The longer answer is that when police in Sydney, Australia pulled over a man recently for a random breathalyzer test, they not only found a car with tires that had seen better days and blacked-out tail lights that might or might not have been strictly legal, but also a curious modification near the engine of the man’s Holden Commodore . When the cops popped the hood, they found an old Black and Decker leaf blower wired to the battery and pointed toward the engine.

“Why would someone wire an old leaf blower into the air filter box?” you might be wondering. And, it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask, really. The answer is that the driver figured that adding a little extra CFM to the outside of the engine would improve its performance. And, sure, this idea seems ill-conceived from our perspective, but you have to take into account that the driver was only 35 years old…

Well, we can at least appreciate that outside-the-box thinking can sometimes bring about innovation. And, honestly, why limit yourself to only using a tool for its intended purpose?

But, the other thing that might flesh out our understanding of why someone might hardwire a leafblower to their engine is that the driver did test positive for methamphetamines. His subsequent arrest soon followed, and he was dragged back to the station to be tested again on the outside chance that a mistake was made in-field. Of course, he retested positive, which surprised no one. A 24-hour driving ban, as well as a defect notice, was issued.

We haven’t heard an update on this story yet, so this bit really is wild speculation, but we think it’s entirely plausible that the driver was eventually charged with a DUI, among other things. The main takeaway here is that Black+Decker hasn’t changed its business model just yet…and that meth is one hell of a drug.
