Robotic Lawn Mower Standard Published by ANSI and OPEI

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) have just published the first-ever industry standard for battery-powered and electrical lawn mowers. Finally, manufacturers and start-up companies can now design robotic, battery-powered, and electrical lawn mowers to a standardized equipment spec.

What Should We Expect?

The outdoor power equipment industry has anticipated the publication of the robotic lawn mower standard for some time now. And, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Experts expect the robotic lawn mower industry to grow by nearly 22% by 2025. Also, in that same timeframe, they expect the market to grow to be worth $1.4 billion, according to a study last year by Grand View Research.

Artificial intelligence, connected technologies and other innovations are changing all industries — including the outdoor power equipment industry. Consumers and commercial users are getting more comfortable with the idea of using new tech, such as robotic mowers. Consumers today still want beautiful and useful yards they can enjoy and spend time in, but they also want to have smart yard maintenance that can be easily managed with an app.

—Kris Kiser, President and CEO, OPEI

Kiser also notes that the current options for commercial and residential users should expand dramatically over the next few years. Because of the new standard, he expects to see more competition in the OPE world as manufacturers design equipment to meet the standard.

The robotic standard, “ANSI/OPEI 60335-2-107-2020 (Standard) for Outdoor Power Equipment – Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2-107: Particular requirements for robotic battery-powered electrical lawnmowers (national adoption with modifications of IEC 60335-2-107)” was approved on September 5, 2019. You can purchase it through the ANSI website at www.webstore.ansi.org .

The new standard came about through a public input process that brought consumers, manufacturers, and commercial equipment users together.

Who’s Who?

OPEI is a recognized Standards Development Organization for the American National Standards Institute. It is active internationally through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in the development of safety and performance standards.

ANSI is the primary organization for fostering the development of technology standards in the US. ANSI works with industry groups. This organization is a member of the ISO and the IEC.
