Stihl MSA 300 C-O Cordless Chainsaw Review

stihl msa 300 c-o chainsaw

To say that battery power has come a long way is an understatement. The once-lackluster performance and runtime that relegated cordless tech to low voltage tools like hedge trimmers are things of the past. Now, we’re seeing power-hungry gear like chainsaws that match, and in some cases surpass, gas-driven units. We put the Stihl MSA 300 C-O cordless chainsaw to the test to see if it belongs in that class.

Stihl MSA 300 C-O Chainsaw Performance

  • Bar Length: 18 in.
  • Chain Gauge: 0.050 in.
  • Chain Pitch: 0.325 in.

    Cutting Power

As the most powerful chainsaw in Stihl’s cordless fleet, the MSA 300 C-O sets a precedent for the lineup’s performance standards. Throughout our field tests, we observed excellent throttle response with almost zero ramp-up time. This chainsaw features a powerful commercial-grade brushless motor that enabled the saw to slice through our Oak test log without any trouble.

Stihl doesn’t specify an exact chain speed or gas cc equivalent, but we estimate that it belongs within the 55 to 60cc range.

    Speed Modes

This saw is equipped with three speed modes—ECO, Normal, and Max. Naturally, you’ll get the longest runtime in ECO mode. However, the tradeoff is a lower chain speed, and, thus, less power. Normal and Max modes utilize the highest power levels available, and only vary in chain speed.

To toggle between modes, simply press the power level selector button on the back of the motor housing.

      Size and Weight

The MSA 300 C-O weighs 13.1 pounds bare and 17.2 pounds with the recommended AP 500 S battery. While this tool isn’t exactly light, it was maneuverable.

Actually, according to our reviewers, the weight distribution was similar to some of the gas models they’ve used.

      Stihl MSA 300 C-O

The MSA 300 C-O’s grip and trigger are pretty straightforward. Regarding the grip, it’s topped with a smooth rubber overmold and features a traditional beavertail safety. There’s also a combination power and presences button on the side of the grip.

What’s more, Stihl designed this saw with a small separation between the motor housing and the rear handle to reduce operator fatigue.

      Digital Display

As with other battery-powered chainsaws, this model features a digital control panel. The screen displays standard status info such as cutting modes, low oil warning and chain brake indicators, and an overheating indicator.

      Power Options

This chainsaw is fully compatible with all AP series batteries, as well as the much larger backpack-mounted AR series. Again, Stihl recommends using the AP 500 S battery given that it enables you to access all power levels. Furthermore, it gives you plenty of runtime.
