It never ceases to amaze us just how powerful battery-powered gear is these days. Years ago, hedge trimmers were the most common cordless tools, largely because they required less juice than others. But, now, you’ve got push mowers, zero-turns, and lawn tractors efficiently running on lithium-ion. Another tool that needs significant power to run is the leaf blower. And, just like the mowers, we’re seeing a remarkable increase in performance. Take, for instance, the 40V Ryobi Backpack Blower (RY404170).
Indeed, as you’ll see in a moment, this unit has some serious punch. So, let’s take a look at what the RY404170 has to offer, and you can decide if it’s the right solution for you.
40V Ryobi Backpack Blower Performance
Starting with the heart of this model, the RY404170 sports a brushless motor that runs on two 40V (6.0Ah) batteries. Together, they deliver an impressive force of 730 CFM and 165 mph. That’s up there with backpack blowers that generate commercial-grade performance.
Something else that caught our eye (or, we should say, ears) is the noise level. Ryobi designed a 40V backpack blower that operates at an incredible 59 dB. That’s one decibel lower than a normal conversation. To put it another way, they say that it’s 85% quieter than a gas blower. In short, this is an asset, particularly considering the number of municipalities that are passing noise ordinances.
Specs

And, last but certainly not least, there are the batteries. When you’re working with cordless equipment, downtime is an important factor. After all, you can’t just refill a tank like you do on a gas model.
Well, this 40V backpack blower’s batteries have a respectable charge time of just 60 minutes, which Ryobi tells us is four times faster than competing units. What’s more, they’re compatible with all tools in the 40V system.

Ryobi 40V Backpack Blower Design
The first thing we have to address about the RY404170’s design is the weight. At 30 pounds, it’s a bit heavy. However, we think that its power and low-noise qualities outweigh the weight. That is, of course, if you don’t mind a little bit more of a load. Additionally, we like the contoured molding and adjustable straps, as they may enhance comfort and help to offset the weight.
Finally, the Ryobi 40V’s variable speed trigger and cruise control are always nice to see on backpack blowers designed for long jobs.
