Our Thoughts
We can compare this updated hedge trimmer to both the 40V and 18V HP models to see the differences and improvements. The 18V HP brushless model looks plenty powerful, however, the jump up to 40V lets the RY40640 extend the dual-action cutting blade 4 more inches. It also expands capacity to 1-inch branches. This feels like a solid upgrade from the 22″ blade and 3/4″ cut capacity of the 18V model.
Even against the former 40V model, you get two more inches of reach and a brushless motor. You also retain the excellent rotating head. It lets you quickly switch from vertical to horizontal cutting and trimming. The hedge sweeper looks to be a new Ryobi staple. We’ve seen this feature on some pro-level brands and we think including it makes for a much more capable hedge trimmer.
