Stihl MS 661 and 661 R Magnum Chainsaws

Break Out the Stihl Magnum Chainsaws for Tough Felling Jobs

For your serious tree work in the forestry, municipal, and tree service sectors, the Stihl MS 661 and MS 661 R Professional Chainsaws deliver. Stihl designed both saws for the dependable performance needed in felling, de-limbing, and bucking large diameter trees. These saws improve upon the previous model (MS 660) with upgrades to fuel efficiency, air filtration, and vibration reduction.

What’s the Big Deal?

Stihl upgraded a few key areas on the new Magnum Chainsaws. You can see physical design changes like the handle and body housing.

Stihl also claims improvements to the anti-vibration system. The MS 661 continues to include an ElastoStart handle that features a built-in shock absorber that also helps reduce the effort when yanking the pull cord.

Speaking of easier start-up, Stihl also keeps the decompression valve that vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. This valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking to reduce the effort required to pull the starter rope. It opens manually and closes automatically when the engine fires.

Like the MS 660, Stihl’s Magnum MS 661 chainsaws use a washable HD2 air filter that gives you a long service life. You’re able to wash them, which extends the life of the filter and lowers your maintenance costs. These filters also feature a larger surface area, which allows for longer run times between cleanings and better performance when working in dusty and dry conditions.

Other Features

  • Toolless fuel and oil caps
  • Side-access chain tensioner
  • Adjustable automatic oiler
  • Wrap handle (on the R model)

Clearly, the Stihl MS 661 and MS 661 R Magnum chainsaws look like minor bump-ups in the line. While this may disappoint some, it also reflects just how solid the MS 660 chainsaws are. If it ain’t broke…You can grab either the standard model or the wrap handle model for between $1279.99 to $1309.99, depending on your preferred bar and chain size; you can choose between 16 in., 18 in., 20 in., and 25 in. options (though these chainsaws can utilize up to a 36 in. bar and chain). They come with a 1-year residential warranty or a 3-month pro warranty.
