EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Outperforms Gas Engines

We have tested and reviewed a lot of self-propelled mowers to see what the landscape looks like. In the world of battery-powered OPE, EGO stands as one of the industry’s front-runners for their high-powered and efficient 56V lineup.  Their LM2142SM EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower sits at the top of their lineup and boasts eye-popping cutting power.

Pros

Cutting Power

The faster your blade tip moves, the easier time your mower has actually cutting. As the grass gets thicker and taller, you need your mower to maintain as much of that tip speed as possible to keep up. We tested our mowers under both light loads and heavy loads to see which ones had the most actual cutting power.

Brushless motors have an electronic advantage that we see in our testing (some brushless motors add additional sensors as well). As the mower senses an increase in how tough the cut is, it can call on additional power. When it doesn’t need to work hard, it slows down to conserve battery.

Under no load, the 20.25″ blade moved at a speed of 2772 RPM, hitting 166.9 MPH at the outer tips. Only one other mower moved more slowly than that while no actual work was being done.

Under a lighter load simulating a weekly maintenance cut, the EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower pulled off a blade tip speed of 167.1 MPH. Most of the mowers we tested stayed pretty comparable across the board here. It’s plenty of speed to make your regular weekly cut.

As we moved into the heavy load testing, we expected to see these brushless motors ramp up the power to accommodate for the higher intensity. In this particular case, we saw an increase in blade tip speed to 178.8 MPH, a change of just under 12 MPH. It’s a reasonable number, but we saw other mowers reach 200 MPH.

Torture Test

For our top contenders, we also ran a torture test to see how they’d handle the madness. We let our lawn grow for 5 weeks during the hot and rainy Florida summer. Then, we set our mowers at 2.5″ cut heights, and our walking speeds at 2.5 MPH, and ran the mowers until the blades stopped.

The EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower made it 60.5 feet, which was far and away the best performance out of the cordless models. In fact, it beat all of our gas models except Honda’s top-of-the-line commercial beast. It even out-cut mowers powered by Honda GCV engines.

What does all this translate to? The EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower will handle your mowing negligence better than its testing stats would indicate. Even though its blade speed isn’t as high as some, the motor’s ability to keep the blade spinning is much better than any of its competition.

Cutting Area

Battery power is a great option, but you’ll hate the day you opted for it over gas if you can’t cut your lawn on one charge. Even if your charger and battery work quickly, having to charge a dead battery halfway through a mow can ruin your workflow. That’s why knowing what you can expect in terms of actual cutting area per charge is an important detail to know when purchasing a mower.

With its 21″ cutting deck and kitted dual 5.0Ah batteries, the EGO Peak Power mower can tackle up to 35,640 square feet, or just over 3/4 of an acre on a charge.  It ran for 48 minutes using only one battery while we used it for a maintenance cut. Upgrading to a pair of 7.5Ah batteries can cover up to 1-1/4 acres!

Only the Greeworks Commercial model managed to squeeze out more cutting area than the EGO, and the margin was pretty slim here. In the end, Greenworks’ 23-3/4″ cutting swath made the difference.

Noise

One of the benefits of going cordless revolves around noise—battery motors are much quieter than gas engines. But how quiet are we actually talking here? In the case of the EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower, we’re talking about 81 dB(A).

To put that into perspective, 81 decibels is equivalent to running your garbage disposal. Gas-powered mowers typically come in at around 96 dB(A), though ours measured 86—94 in no-load testing.

Compared to the other battery-powered options, the EGO Peak Power comes in 7th, though almost every cordless mower we tested grouped into the 78-82 dB(A) range, with a couple of outliers at the 85 and 88-decibel marks.

Feature Set

Adjustable Speed Self-Propel

EGO’s self-propelled drive control looks a little unorthodox with its quarter-sized handle, but it’s pretty comfortable to use. You can easily adjust your walking speed via the throttle on the left side of the handle. The speed ranges from “crawling along” to “I have to jog to keep up with it,” so you’re likely to find a comfortable speed somewhere in there.

Height Adjustment and Range

Like most cordless lawn mowers, EGO allows you to set your cutting height in 6 positions between 1.5″ and 4.25″ by adjusting one lever. Rather than having to go around to each individual wheel to adjust the height, you set all 4 at once.

We tested many mowers that have this feature, but more than a few of them felt a little flimsy at the adjustment points at the wheels. The EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower felt pretty rigid and sturdy, though a steel deck might improve it some.

Simple Handle Adjustments

Many of the mowers we tested have 3 handle positions, just like this EGO does. However, not many of them were as comfortable and simple to adjust as EGO’s Quick Adjust Lever. It’s really as simple as squeezing the lever and moving the handle into position. You can also fold it over and store it upright in your garage or shop.

Adjusting for your height is simple as well. The telescoping handle has 3 positions and can be adjusted by simply pulling the tabs out, sliding the handle to the length you need, and snapping the tabs back in place.

Missing Features

• Steel deck: Especially considering the price point, we really would like to see this mower fitted with a steel deck. Plastic decks cut down on weight (which doesn’t matter a lot with a self-propelled model), but will generally wear faster than steel.

Value

The EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower is available either online or from your local Home Depot. Kitted with two 5.0Ah batteries and a fast charger, it will run you $749. Granted, this on the high end for residential mowers, but this mower represents the top of the line for EGO self-propelled mowers. Plus, it comes with a 5-year limited warranty.

The Bottom Line

If you have a good amount of lawn to mow and are tired of the hassles that come with gas, the EGO Peak Power Self-Propelled Lawn Mower makes a lot of sense. It can run for up to 3/4 of an acre, and it the only mower that legitimately outperforms gas in a worst-case cutting scenario. What’s more, EGO has really dialed it in with the ergonomics and convenience features. Everything about this mower feels super simple and convenient.
