Makita seems to have cracked the code when it comes to their 4-stroke engines found on the new Makita MM4 4-Stroke Hedge Trimmers. In many cases, (heavily documented in the motocross world) 4-stroke engines can’t produce near the amount of horsepower that two-stroke does because of the engine cycle.
At 1.1 horsepower, Makita’s MM4 engine is getting nearly identical performance that 2-stroke gets from the same displacement engine. They’ve also managed to do it without adding the kind of weight normally associated with 4-strokes.
There are plenty of other reasons to be excited about this as well. Fuel efficiency is much greater and emissions are much lower in 4-stroke engines. You also get reduced noise levels. There’s no oil to mix in your gas, so you can use the same can for the mower and trimmers.
Makita’s MM4 engine is easier to start thanks to their Mechanical Engine Decompression System. Engineers also built a multi-position lubrication system into the engine, allowing it to be used in any direction or angle without losing access to oil and shutting down.
