The Makita 18-inch high-torque 40V string trimmer is among the latest additions to the brand’s fleet of 2024 offerings.
Part of their XGT line, it’s got plenty of features to talk about–certainly enough to grab our attention. So, without further ado, let’s jump into this tool’s performance and design elements.
Makita 40V String Trimmer Performance
We’ll kick things off with the power plant. Driving the GRU07T is a brushless motor and a 40V (5.0Ah) battery. According to Makita, this duo’s output is comparable to a 35cc engine. That performance exceeds the top end of what we generally see with gas-powered string trimmers, so this facet in itself is impressive.
Indeed, this aspect of Makita’s 40V string trimmer interests me the most, as it magnifies its capabilities. After all, you may not always be tackling well-manicured lawns. Because they included high torque gear ratios (providing an estimated 20% more power), the GRU07T can likely serve as a light-duty brushcutter.

Makita 40V String Trimmer Design
On the design side, the GRU07T looks equally impressive.
For one, you’ve got a variable speed trigger and cruise control. Furthermore, it features a steel drive shaft, which usually cuts down on vibration and extends the life of the tool.
Makita also equipped this 40V string trimmer with a rapid-load bump-and-feed head. This should enable you to swap it out in a matter of seconds.
Finally, I like that you can reverse the cutting head’s rotation. This is a great feature when working around pools and walkways.
