Two New 18V LXT Cordless Hedge Trimmers Offer Increased Cutting Capacity

Makita will soon release the XHU07 and XHU08 Cordless Hedge Trimmers, which look to be the beginning of a real push from the company to get more involved with cordless OPE tool lines.

10-Second Summary

  • Model Numbers: XHU07 (24″ model), XHU08 (30″)
  • Brushless Motor
  • 4,400 SPM
  • 5-Position Rotating Rear Handle
  • 3-Speed Options (Low: 2,000 SPM; Medium: 3,600 SPM; Large: 4,400 SPM)

What’s The Big Deal?

There’s a couple of talking points about the new Makita Hedge Trimmers, and they revolve around the power upgrades and the features. First of all, Makita has included brushless motors on both of these hedge trimmers. They can generate up to 4,400 strokes per minute for speedy cutting action.

Makita has also increased the cut capacity on their new hedge trimmers, which come in either a 24″ or 30″ model. Additionally, these new hedge trimmers run off of 18V, as opposed to the 36V that the older, brushed version used. This means that you get to drop the extra battery weight since these hedge trimmers only need one 18V battery.

As far as features go, the new Makita Hedge Trimmers include a 5-position rear handle, which makes cutting overhead a whole lot more comfortable. They also include a 3-speed switch to allow you to match your speed to your application.

The Bottom Line

We tested the Makita XHU04 last year when we ran our Best Cordless Hedge Trimmer Shootout, and frankly, it could’ve used some improvement. While we felt like the old trimmers were comfortable to use and had a solid build quality, the runtime, power, and cutting capacity all could’ve used some extra engineering.

Because we’re generally pretty happy with the work that Makita does, we’re looking forward to seeing how the XHU07 and XHU08 Makita Hedge Trimmers improves upon the foundation that the XHU04 laid. A brushless motor, upgraded cut speed and capacity, and reduced weight are all good places to start.
