Back at the 2015 GIE Expo, CAT unveiled plans to include hand and foot controls to their D-Series loaders. An upgrade from the 226B3 model, the CAT 226D Skid Steer Loader included those hand and foot controls as options, as well as an updated feature list that kept the operator’s safety and comfort in mind. Still a big seller in the CAT lineup, the 226D model comes with a radial lift design that combines both digging performance and superior mid-lift reach. A range of available options helps to make the D-Series CAT skid steer loaders some of the most versatile tools on the jobsite. The 226D model, along with other D-Series loaders and attachments, is available now from your local Caterpillar dealer.
What’s New?
With this product release, CAT has emphasized an improvement to the operator station. The 226D features a wide and spacious cab interior. The one-piece, sealed and pressurized cab keeps dust and noise out for a cleaner and quieter workspace. Clear sight lines grant superior visibility, while an optional high-backed, heated, air ride seat with mounted joysticks increase operator comfort. Should you choose to purchase upgrades to the 226D, the cab can also include A/C and heat, as well as a selectable pattern control. The CAT 226D can also come with an optional Advanced Display Panel, which provides on-screen adjustments to working parameters and preferences. In addition, a security system and rearview camera are available.
The electronically controlled CAT C2.2 engine powers the CAT 226D, providing high horsepower and torque. The newer D-Series engines comply with U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards. CAT’s 226D features the Intelligent Leveling System, a suite of features that includes electronic dual self-leveling, a work tool positioner, a return-to-dig feature, as well as an electronic snubbing feature that cushions the descent of the lift arms.
The operator has the ability to set precise RPM settings through an electronic dial-type throttle. When in high-idle, the foot throttle acts as a decelerator pedal, allowing the user to adjust travel speeds during precise maneuvers. A throttle-smoothing Ride Control feature monitors accelerator pedal movements over rough terrain and adjusts speeds to provide a consistent and steady speed. The CAT 226D also features a high flow, high-performance hydraulic system that provides the lift and breakout forces necessary to get the job done quickly.
A Wealth of Attachment Options
Aside from the features within the actual unit, one of the greatest benefits to the CAT Loaders is their multifunctionality. CAT has a wealth of attachment options that can meet just about any need you could realistically expect from a skid steer loader. From buckets, backhoes, brush cutters, and brooms, to snow blowers, stump grinders, cold planers, and wheel saws, CAT probably has an attachment to help get the job done right.
CAT’s quick coupler system allows a user to easily change out work tools. There are two options with the coupler system as well. The standard coupler allows the user to manually engage and disengage the work tools using two high leverage handles. But, the CAT 226D also has an optional electronic quick coupler, which allows the operator to switch out tools without having to leave the cab.
Final Thoughts
These CAT 226D models have been available for a while now, and while CAT doesn’t make the only skid steers on the market, their products do make plenty of appearances on a plethora of job sites. Part of the reason for that comes down to functionality; whatever the application, the chances are pretty good CAT makes an attachment for it. They can find work in construction, plumbing, demo, maintenance, and farming applications, just to name a few. They tend to be solidly built machines that wind up as workhorses in their respective industries.
Although I personally don’t have any experience with their ease of service or their customer support, CAT seems to believe they’re tops in those departments. They offer preventative maintenance programs, best-in-class parts availability, operator training programs, and guaranteed maintenance contracts. With all the functionality options that the CAT loaders provide, it might be well worth it to look into the D-Series if you find yourself in the market for some heavy machinery.
