When it comes time to prune your trees, there are quite a few tools for you to choose from. For example, you can go with a 14-inch chainsaw, or maybe you have a pair of loppers in the garage or shed. Each of these options is fine. But, if you want to get really bullish on tackling your tree maintenance, a mini chainsaw offers big advantages. For example, their 6- to 8-inch bars enable you to attack thicker branches–sometimes thick enough to qualify as limbs. Moreover, they are highly maneuverable, and generally speaking, lack the intimidation factor of larger saws. That said, most major OPE manufacturers have models in their fleets–solutions like the DeWalt 20V Pruning Chainsaw (DCCS623B).
To help you narrow your search, here’s a rundown of what it can do.
DeWalt 20V Pruning Chainsaw Performance Features
Driving this saw is a high-efficiency brushless motor and 20V lithium-ion battery. This duo generates a chain speed of a little over 25 feet per second (8.6 meters per second), which is excellent. In fact, it’s measurably faster than other high-end models we’ve handled from competing brands.

According to DeWalt, this 20V pruning chainsaw’s performance characteristics should enable you to cut limbs up to 6 inches in diameter. As many manufacturers do, they tested the DCCS623B on soft 4 × 4 pine. We’re interested in seeing how it does on heavier varieties like cherry trees. (And that may be part of a future article.)
Finally, DeWalt tells us to expect 70 cuts per charge. Naturally, this will vary based on what you’re cutting.
DeWalt 20V Pruning Chainsaw Design
DeWalt seems to have put a lot of work into designing the DCCS623B.
For instance, they tout this tool as being 61% lighter and three times more compact than comparable models. Moreover, DeWalt equipped their 20V pruning chainsaw with an auto-oiler. However, we would like to see them switch to toolless tensioning on future iterations.
Lastly, the integrated tip guard is a useful feature, giving you added stability during up-cuts.
