Can These Two New Makita Cordless Chainsaws Compete With Gas?

Makita has just announced the launch of the new brushless cordless 14″ and 16″ top handle chainsaws, adding yet another layer to their already diverse chainsaw portfolio. The XCU08 and XCU09 feature a compact design, making them the ideal choice for arborists and utility workers. Plus, with these releases, Makita makes the bold claim that they now produce the most powerful cordless top handle chainsaws on the market.

10-Second Summary

  • Both models feature an outer rotor brushless motor direct-drive system
  • Equivalent to 30cc gas chainsaw
  • Cuts up to 25% faster than gas chainsaws
  • Variable speed trigger
  • 0-3,940 FPM chain speed
  • Torque boost mode helps get through thick branches

How Much Power Are We Talking?

Makita claims that both the XCU08 and XCU09 cordless chainsaws have the equivalent power of a 30cc gas-powered chainsaw, but that they actually cut up to 25% faster. Ostensibly, this is due to a combination of the 36V of power coming from the two 18V batteries and the Makita-built outer rotor brushless motor direct drive system.

The Makita top handle chainsaws feature a variable speed trigger and 0-3,940 FPM chain speed. If that doesn’t do enough for you, these Makita cordless chainsaws also feature a Torque Boost Mode to help you get through the harder and thicker branches.

Finally, for the power-conscious, Makita claims that both the XCU08 and XCU09 get some solid runtimes. In fact, the XCU08 can make around 62 cuts in 6×6 Douglas fir on a charge.

Features

Makita intends for the new cordless top handle chainsaws to find most of their use in the Pro demographic, as evidenced by their rich feature sets. Both the 14″ and the 16″ feature a 3/8″ LP. .43″ sprocket nose guide bar and chain for precise cutting. Bumper spikes help to prevent pull-in.

A captured guide bar nut and lateral chain tensioner offer convenience with bith the operation and the maintenance. You’re also able to automatically adjust the chain lubrication, and these saws feature a large oil filling port with a view window.

A built-in lock-off lever keeps the blade from accidentally engaging while the front handguard actuates the chain brake when it’s engaged. An auto power-off feature also shuts down the chainsaw after 60 seconds of inactivity to help preserve battery life. A rear attachment point lets you tie the saw off to a climbing saddle.

Finally, to keep things running smoothly for the long haul, Makita also includes their XPT technology. This is basically a set of integrated seals that channel water and dust away from the integral parts of the saw. This should mean a longer tool lifespan.
