New Honda EU2200i Generator First Look – Super Quiet Series

Honda EU2200i Generator

Generators were often thought of as a loud an obnoxious tool required to get the work done on the jobsite. In 1998 Honda introduced the EU1000i super quiet generator, bringing joy to the ears of many. The all-new Honda EU2200i generator adds even more value to the Super Quiet Series of generators, with more power, easier maintenance, and easier controls.

On a construction job site, or working offsite altogether, multiple trades fight over one temp power-pole, or a generator, or even both. The generator we used to haul around was hard to start, sounded like a go-kart without a muffler, and we had to fill it with oil as often as the gasoline. We used a homemade 150′ Romex extension cord, just to get the generator as far away as possible. I won’t even get into our process for when it rained – in Central Florida, it rains all the time.

Honda EU2200i Generator Features

Honda GXR120 121cc Engine
Honda GXR120 121cc Engine

Powered by the Honda GXR120 121cc commercial series engine, the Honda EU2200i generator delivers 2,200 watts of power. The output of this power runs through a 30A 125V locking plug and 20A 125V single outlet. This is 10% more power than the outgoing EU2000i model. You can even daisy-chain or combine more than one EU2200i or EU2000i generators together, increasing total output.

Even quieter and easier than before, the new Honda EU2200i  generator is designed with a maintenance-free and low-noise timing belt. Honda’s overhead camshaft (OHC) is legendary in the small engine world, providing more efficiency and optimized power, hence better fuel efficiency. With precision engineering, such as a dual ball-bearing supported crankshaft, Honda has lowered vibration and extended engine life.

Honda’s GXR120 engine also includes a special cast-iron cylinder sleeve, further aiding in durability. To keep things smaller and quieter, the compact muffler along with the OHC layout reduces noise by 1 dB over the outgoing EU2000i (GX100 engine). For easier starting, the Honda EU2200i generator has an automatic decompression system. Finally, in an effort to keep things somewhat dummy-proof, Honda includes the Oil Alert feature that prevents the engine from running if the oil level is too low.

Inverter Technology

Inverter technology is the new wave in these smaller and very quiet generators. But, they aren’t so small anymore, as we spotted the EU3000i running at the World of Concrete 2018 event. Not only does Honda’s inverter technology help to make things smaller and quieter, it also means stable and clean power. Electronics and computers have very sensitive circuitry that requires “clean power”, or current that doesn’t have spikes and valleys.

Included in the Honda EU2200i generator is the Honda-designed microprocessor that conditions power through a multi-step process. High-voltage multi-phase power is produced from the generator’s alternator, then the power is converted into DC power, then back to AC by the inverter. The microprocessor controls this entire process, including the speed of the engine based on demand.

Conclusion

Inverter technology has definitely changed the way people view generators. You don’t have to get ugly looks from everyone when you pull the generator out at the campground. With the Honda EU2200i generator, you can keep the lights burning and fire up that big-screen TV to watch the game. These things are so quiet, it’s hard to tell they’re even running.

We’re looking forward to getting the Honda EU2200i generator in for review soon, so we can get a true hands-on review.

You can find the Honda EU2200i Generator for about $1,300.
