New Upgrades and Features
The new Makita LXT Cordless string trimmer has a few marked improvements on the XRU09, the model that this new trimmer replaces in the Makita 36V lineup. One of the first things you’ll notice is that the runtime has been improved here. Running off of power from the kitted 5.0Ah batteries, the XRU15 can deliver up to an hour and a half worth of weed trimming power. It features an exclusive Makita-built outer-rotor brushless motor direct-drive system. This provides an increase in torque to all your trimming applications.
This is also noteworthy in that the increased torque of the motor allows for a wider cutting swath. Where the old model featured a 13.75″ cutting swath, Makita has been able to bump that up to an even 15″. The bump-feed powerhead uses Makita’s ultra-quiet 0.80″ twisted line.
Makita set out to improve the overall ergonomics with this new model as well. A narrow debris shield lets you see what you’re doing while simultaneously providing some protection to your tender face. The XRU15 also features a steel driveshaft, which is another upgrade to the previous model. This improvement results in longer life and reduced vibration. An upgraded loop handle adjusts quickly to improve the user experience.
Makita has also laced all the controls at the user’s fingertips. You’ll have 3 speed options for power management, as well as a reverse rotation function that helps you untangle yourself when you get wrapped up in thicker grasses and weeds.
New Tech
The new Makita LXT string trimmer also features a Torque Drive Technology mode that automatically shifts from 3500 to 6500 RPM depending on the load you put on it. With the lighter bits, the trimmer prioritizes runtime, but thicker patches result in the trimmer ramping up the power. This mode allows you to check out mentally, letting the tool do its own power management.
Finally, Makita has also included Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) on the XRU15. Essentially, this is a series of integrated seals that channel dust and water away from vital components. This extends the tool’s lifespan considerably.
