DeWalt Continues Electric Lawn Mower Line with the 21.5-inch Self-Propelled Model

We review dozens of the best battery-powered lawn mowers each year, and we love seeing manufacturers continue to make improvements to their products. DeWalt recently unveiled two new lawn mowers that address the original model’s lack of runtime. The DeWalt DCMWSP255Y2 and DCMWSP255U2 21.5-in 2x20V self-propelled lawn mowers offer 2 battery choices for consumers depending upon their needs. We wanted to see if either presents enough of a gain for consumers to reconsider DeWalt as a major player in the electric self-propelled lawn mower market.

DeWalt 2x20V Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers – The Big Deal

DeWalt went with a rear-wheel drive self-propelled lawn mower in these designs. They use something they call auto-sensing technology to give more power to the brushless motor driving when needed. It ramps up the RPMs (blade speed), for example, when encountering thick grass.

The self-propelled DeWalt 2x20V DCMWSP255 has a pretty decent range for various cutting heights—1.5 to 4-inches. That should make it more useful for a larger diversity of users and grasses—from Fescue and Zoysia to St. Augustine. As with many lawn mowers, you can choose to either mulch or bag as desired. DeWalt also lets you side discharge—a Pro option we don’t find on all battery-powered lawn mowers.

DeWalt DCMWSP255Y2 20V Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

We also noted the convenient fold-over handle. We’ve seen many Pro-targeted brands that don’t include this (including Makita). A folding handle means you can store this mower—and those like it—vertically in a shed or trailer. Folded and positioned upright, the lawn DeWalt DCMWSP255 mower takes up about 70% less floor space.

DeWalt DCMWSP255Y2 vs DCMWSP255U2 Model Options

DeWalt gives you two 20V battery options with this 21-inch mower—hence the difference in model numbers. The DeWalt DCMWSP255Y2 includes two 12Ah 20V batteries and gets up to 70 minutes of runtime. The DeWalt DCMWSP255U2 comes with a pair of 10Ah 20V batteries. It will cut for up to 60 minutes before needing a recharge. Obviously, the type and amount of grass you cut will affect runtime.
