Greenworks is no stranger to the battery-powered riding mower market, and we’ve been keeping track of their work. In particular, we gave their 60V CrossoverZ Zero-Turn (CRZ 426) and 60V CrossoverT Lawn Tractor (CRT 426) overall high marks. But progress is a relentless march. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’ve since released enhanced iterations of both models. For example, replacing the 60V CRT 426 is the Greenworks 80V CrossoverT lawn tractor (CRT 428).
On that note, let’s see if this mower measures up to its predecessor.

Greenworks 80V CrossoverT Performance Features
Greenworks has made a solid effort to give their riding mowers a competitive edge, and that still seems to hold true.
Driving the CRT 428 is an 80V brushless motor fed by six 5.0Ah batteries. Together, the two generate power equivalent to a 24 HP gas engine. That’s about what you can expect to get from residential lawn tractors like the John Deere S140.
For the most part, we’re dealing with the same machines here. But, in spite of its higher voltage, the Greenworks 80V CrossoverT doesn’t exactly crush its 60V predecessor in power. In fact, the CRT 428 is slower, with a max drive speed of 6 mph as opposed to the 426’s 8 mph.

Its cutting capacity is the same. Both models can handle lawns that are upwards of 2 acres. And, according to Greenworks, the 80V CrossoverT should be able to finish everything on a single charge. What’s more, this new system can have all six 5.0Ah batteries up and running 15 minutes faster than the CRT 426.
Also worth mentioning are the dual cutting blades, which help with negotiating challenging conditions such as mowing wet grass and dense growth.
Cruise control, towing capability, as well as remote diagnostics and anti-theft monitoring apps are a few other nice features.
Greenworks 80V CrossoverT Design
Regarding its build, the CRT 428 is reasonably durable. A possible point of concern is the deck material. While it’s by no means flimsy, 13-gauge steel isn’t exactly the strongest construction.
To be fair, though, you do have to strike a balance when designing battery-powered equipment. This involves walking a fine line between keeping it light enough for efficient operation, and strong enough to withstand the abuses that accompany mowing. Furthermore, if you’re cutting a neatly manicured lawn free of rocks, sand, roots, and other hazards, you don’t have to worry much.
